Miae Kim Sculpture
Miae Kim is a Korean American ceramic artist based in London. She was born and raised in South Korea but spent much of her adult life in Los Angeles, where she worked for many years in visual effects before discovering clay. Her ceramic practice brings together visual storytelling, Korean heritage, and a deep interest in form, surface and pattern.
Miae’s East Meets West series reflects her layered cultural identity. Inspired by Korean architecture, palace walls, temple roof tiles, traditional patterns and Hangul script, she reinterprets these references through a contemporary ceramic language. The work combines the quiet structure of Korean design with a graphic sensibility shaped by her background in visual effects.
Her lidded boxes are individually hand-built, giving each piece its own character and presence. Surfaces are developed through terra sigillata, carving, inlay, decals, slips and glazes. Korean words and poetic fragments often appear within the work, allowing language to become both decoration and meaning.
Miae is drawn to the idea of the box as a place of holding: memory, culture, language and small private stories.
Material: Stoneware clay, terra sigillata, slips, underglazes, decals and glazes.
Technique: Hand-built slab construction, with hand-cut lids and layered surface decoration including terra sigillata, carving, inlay, resist work, decals and glazing. Each piece is individually made and high-fired.
