Penny Jones Handmade Sculpture

Penny was born and raised in South Devon where she still lives and works in the beautiful countryside, nestled between moor and sea. Growing up surrounded by nature has influenced her work for as long as she can remember and it reflects her great love for the natural world, be it the curve in a tiny leaf or the arc of a rolling wave.

Her unique sculptures are hand built using slim coils of clay; a method which allows the shape to slowly form as if grown from the land itself. They are then fired once to allow the alchemy of heat to change the material from earth-like clay into ceramic, then glazed and fired again and finally smoke-fired in wood shavings. These processes are often repeated many times until the piece reveals the captivating contrast between glossy colourful interior and unpolished stone-like exterior.

Recently she has been drawn to the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi; literally meaning ‘golden repair’ a process born of necessity as smoke firing can be destructive, which follows the philosophy that imperfections can be celebrated and result in something more beautiful.
